DJ Of the Month February 2014: Ruby Tuesday!

DJ Of the Month February 2014: Ruby Tuesday!

We caught up with Ruby Tuesday, who has been helping out lots around the Station especially in our Jazz department – tune into her show every Thursday evening from 10 to midnight!

What brought you to WRUV?

In high school, I had a radio show for almost three years on Goddard College’s WGDR, and so when I came to UVM it seemed like an interesting idea to pick it up again. Also, my mom had a great soundscape show called “Two Heads are Better Than Four Legs” on WRUV in the 80s when the station was just up and running, and so I also loved the idea of carrying on the legacy.

Tell us about your show– what do you talk about/what kind of music do you play?

My main focus is jazz, and although I call it “straight jazz classics and funk/soul infusions”, I really end up playing a pretty wide range. On my WGDR show I was playing a lot of indie rock, and so when I came here I really wanted to switch it up and start exploring another genre. Jazz has been a tried-and-true favorite for as long as I can remember (Ella Fitzgerald was my first CD), and so it seemed like the perfect way to go. I am most interested in old-school ladies like Ella, and if I had enough material I would probably play mostly classics like her, but being my limited collection is forcing me to branch out and try new things, which has been a fun adventure.

Where did you get your show name?

“It’s Only a Paper Moon” is the name of a song written in the early thirties, which was recorded most memorably by artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Nat King Cole during the second world war. I try to play it as the last song of my show every night, so you can hear it if you happen to be tuning in around 11:55 on a Thursday night.

What do you like to do besides being a DJ?

I love cooking, and watching movies, and going out to see/hear music. Right now I’m just waiting for spring, but soon I’ll be able to start exploring all the waterholes of Vermont again, too.

What’s your favorite snack food?
Toast with butter and nutritional yeast. Yum.
