DJ of the Month September 2014: Joanna
What brought you to WRUV?
I lost my job in June of 2010 and I needed some inspiration and direction. Two days later I attended WRUV’s DJ training and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made! I had a love for international music and I just needed a creative outlet to share it. WRUV is the perfect place.
Tell us about your show– what do you talk about/what kind of music do you play?
I play all non-English language music from around the world. I tend to focus on contemporary African music but you’ll hear music from Brazil, France, Spain, India, Australia and beyond, too. I gravitate toward world folk, singer-songwriter, blues, hip-hop and reggae because I like those genres in general.
Where did you get your show name?
“No Life in the West” is a lyric from Buju Banton’s song “Til I’m Laid to Rest”. I like Buju Banton’s music and my dog is named Buju, too! I tried and tried to find a show name that I liked and one day I was listening to that song and I said, that’s it.
What do you like to do besides being a DJ?
Film and music are my two passions. I’m a Netflix junkie and I see a lot of live music, too. My friends and I have a cooking club that meets every month and I love to cook. I like to be outside hiking and swimming with my dog and I like yoga too. I’m a big UVM hockey fan – go Cats go!
Thanks Joanna!!
