DJ of the Month
DJ of the Month May 2015: Andrew
What brought you to WRUV?
I’d always kinda thought it would be cool to have a show but I never got fully motivated until this semester. I basically think I just found some really amazing music over the last year or so and I felt like I needed to share it. Simple as that.
Tell us about your show– what do you talk about/what kind of music do you play?
“The Bakery” is my show and its been all over the place with music recently but its always focused on hip-hop. I always do about an hour of new rap. I try to keep most of my programming producer-centered. That means sometimes playing instrumental hip-hop or even just mentioning who was behind the beat. Everybody knows the rapper most of the time but producers need some recognition too! I’ve done a few shows where I highlight the career of one producer in particular and it seemed to be received well so I think I will continue with more of those in the future. I also play some R&B, Soul, Funk, and electronic (lots of Brainfeeder).
Where did you get your show name?
One of my favorite albums of all time is J Dilla’s “Donuts”. Its just a collection of short hip hop beats that are so soulful and wonderful. I am not sure if it was intentional but I always kind of assumed “donuts” was in reference to the tracks. I like that idea. Each beat is a donut…a quick little moment of enjoyment and you can have all flavors. I bring you those sweet pastry beats from the bakery.
What do you like to do besides being a DJ?
I make my own beats under the name svpply. This is a link to most of my stuff: https://soundcloud.com/svpply. I also skateboard when its nice out and just generally try to keep it G. I obsess over my grades in school too…not sure why but its always done me good.
