DJ of the Month
DJ Loaf
Introducing WRUV’s February DJ of the month: DJ Loaf!
Sophie’s DJ name comes from her nickname, Sophaloaf, and her DJ roots go back further than her WRUV training in the fall of 2023. Sophie’s parents met at their college radio station, her mom doing the weather and her dad an on-air DJ, and they are dedicated listeners of their daughter’s show, Sophie Spins. Sophie gives her family credit for sparking her interest in music. Her dad’s “dad band” even used to play at her elementary school.
Sophie primarily plays R&B on air, but after checking out some different genres on WRUV’s new music WordPress, has expanded genre-wise and plays whatever it is she feels like playing. Sophie loves going to concerts, has beef with the acapella groups, and although she listens to folk music and goes to school in Vermont, she doesn’t like Noah Kahan. Sophie is often an interviewer on WRUV’s Exposure and if she were a kitchen utensil, she’d be a whisk – IYKYK.
Outside of the music world, Sophie studies medical laboratory science. She is in two research labs and her work involves injecting fish – the lab’s models for humans – with cancer cells to find a cure for lung cancer.
Read WRUV’s full interview with Sophie below, interviewed by Sierra Preveza. This semester, you can tune in to DJ’s Loafs show, Sophie Spins, on Mondays from 10-11AM EST.
Sierra- Congrats on getting DJ of the month! Let’s start with what’s your DJ name and what
made you choose that name?
Sophie- My DJ name is DJ Loaf, and I’m really basic. It’s just cus my name is Sophie, it’s
Sophaloaf. Its a nickname for Sophie, like Sophaloaf
Sierra- Cool! I’ve never heard that nickname before! How long have you been a DJ for?
Sophie- I trained my Freshman year, fall semester, so that was 2023. Now im a Junior so its been
two years
Sierra- Oh nice! What inspired you to start training and become a DJ?
Sophie- My parents actually met at their college radio station, so it’s like family tradition, I
guess? We saw it when I was touring so I thought I should give it a try. I also love to sing and
music.
Sierra- Awh that’s so cute, where were they DJs?
Sophie- University of Michigan, I think she was the weather girl and he was a DJ.
Sierra- Oh my gosh that’s so adorable, why don’t you tell me a bit about your show?
Sophie- My show is Sophie Spins, Monday 10-11 Am. Usually I’ve been on Mondays or Fridays.
Always in the morning because I am not a night person. It used to be only R&B, but I changed
recently. I was listening to all the new music on WordPress and was like, wait there’s really good
stuff that’s not just R&B, so I just play whatever I want.
Sierra- Do you have any dedicated listeners?
Sophie- My parents! My roommates like to tune in too, and they’ll text me.
Sierra- That’s sweet! What has been your favorite part of WRUV?
Sophie- I don’t know if you’ve been yet, but we do karaoke, like they had scaryoke two years ago
at Radio Bean, so it’s Halloween themed. I went with my roommate, and she dressed as a pool
ball, and I was a vampire, so that was really fun. I got to meet all the DJs and sing together.
Sierra- That sounds super fun. What else do you like to do when you’re not hanging at WRUV?
Sophie- I’m a bug science girl, I’m studying med lab science. So I am in two research labs, and I
give cancer to fish. So it’s pretty cool!
Ava- You give cancer to a fish!?!?
Sophie- Yeah, you have to inject them with cancer cells.
Sierra- Do you cure them?
Sophie- No… But they’re a model for humans, so it’s good! I swear!
Sierra- So you’re kinda working on finding a cure?
Sophie- Yeah, for lung cancer.
Sierra- My cousin used to cut heads off of rats for research, so…
Sophie- EW! I would not do that.
Sierra- Yeah… Anyways! Are you in any other clubs?
Sophie- The MLS club, which is my major’s club, and I was in the chem cats, but I quit… really
controversial.
Sierra- How do you feel about being nominated DJ of the month?
Sophie- It was so cute, I really wasn’t expecting it at the station meeting. I got an email from
Anna, and I was like who did that? It was really cute. Also, because I don’t know that many
people, I thought it was because of the number of people that voted, so I was double-shocked!
Sierra- Do you have any advice to give to any DJs looking to become DJ of the month?
Sophie- No, haha, I didn’t do anything… Show up to your shows!
Sierra- Hey, that’s a good one!
Sophie- Yeah, I don’t know… Be nice to people and go to exposure maybe?
Sierra- Would you like to say anything about exposure?
Sophie- I’ve been a few times, and it’s always awesome. Especially interviewing, because you
can ask them silly questions about their socks or what kitchen utensil they are. It’s really low
pressure, and you get a private concert.
Sierra- What kitchen utensil are you?
Sophie- I feel like a whisk! How about you?
Sierra- I like that! I don’t know… I was just thinking like a fork, knife, spoon, but I don’t
know…
Sophie- You gotta expand your mind.
Sierra- I feel like a toaster just because I really miss my toaster, or a rice cooker.
Sophie- Awh I’m sorry!
Sierra- If you could go back to the start, what advice would you give yourself?
Sophie- Check the new music more often because there are good hidden gems in there. Also, if
you’re training, give yourself lots of time to shadow. I didn’t, and then I had to go at 6 Am and it
was horrible
Sierra- How was your training process?
Sophie- I really liked making the demo, it was chill. I got to meet a lot of the community
members while shadowing.
Sierra- Do you do anything else with music outside of WRUV?
Sophie- No, this is it, I like going to concerts! I auditioned for the acapella groups, and they
didn’t let me in, but it’s okay. We have beef now.
Sierra- Not everyone can live that Pitch Perfect life, unfortunately.
Sophie- Yeah, I did in high school, so I was like, “I got this,” and they gave me a call back, but I
didn’t get in. It’s competitive, I’m telling you.
Sierra- Wait, that’s crazy. What sparked your interest in music?
Sophie- I feel like my family. My dad was in a dad band; he would play at my elementary
school.
Sierra- I know we talked about what you play on your show, but are there other types of music
that you really like?
Sophie- I like R&B, I feel like, weirdly, I listen to folk music. I don’t know why, but I like it. It
soothes the soul.
Sierra- And like… When you go to UVM, you gotta like folk music.
Sophie- I don’t like Noah Kahan tho… Hot take.
Sierra- That’s kinda valid, I don’t really like Stick Season.
Sophie- Yeah, it’s overplayed. They play it all over; if they have a pep rally, they play it.
Sierra- Do you have a favorite piece of art in the booth?
Sophie- I don’t even remember what’s in there. The pen drawing someone did of themselves is
really cool.
Sierra- Have you put anything up in there?
Sophie- No, I haven’t. I think next semester is my last semester. I have to do cyclicals, and they
ship you off. I’m going to Boston, probably. But I’ll put up my top songs once I’m leaving, now
it’s too soon.
Sierra- I feel like that’s a good spot to end this! Thank you so much and Congratulations!
