DJ of the Month - July 2012
Professor

Buh-buh-bah-dahhhhhh! The DJ of the Month for July is none other than our ever-so-respectable Professor, Chrisopher Olah. From his younger years playing the trumpet, to a super cool papa exposing tiny Chris to diverse genres of music, his musical taste has evolved and condensed into a beautifully cacophonous three hours of wonder.  Chris has contributed a lot to WRUV by staying actively involved in the happenings of the station, while always keeping a positive attitude and demeanor.  If you are in search of a variety of interesting tunes to jump start your morning, pack up your L.L. Bean backpacks for class and enjoy an electic lecture from your Professor every Thursday from 9am-12pm!

What brought you to WRUV?

I don't know what really brought me to WRUV, I guess the opportunity and the variety of music that we play is different from every other station out there.  You have the chance to hear bands that aren't played anywhere else.

Tell us about your show--what kind of music do you play? Where did you get your show name?

I play an eclectic mix of everything.  The first hour anything goes, it's what I'm in the mood for that day, it's all "Fair Game."  The 2nd hour is jazz and blues.  The 3rd hour is funk and soul.  When I was thinking of a show name I felt as that people's music taste, as in life, pigeon hole a little niche preventing them from being exposed to new things and ideas.  I didn't want to play just 1 style of music, I wanted everything to be fair game.

What kind of music did you listen to in school? Has your musical taste transformed over the years?

Growing up my musical tastes were heavily influenced by the instrument that I was playing and my parents.  I grew up listening and playing classical piano and switched to trumpet when I got to middle school, at the beginning of high school I switched to trombone.  My dad listened to jazz, fusion, classic rock and oldies.  My Mom listened to a wide range of genre's such as afro-cuban jazz, japanese recorder, hawaiian music, afro-beat and just all over the place.  Every once-in-awhile she would be able to call a band before they exploded into popularity.  For instance the Afro Cuban All-Stars, Diana Krall, Joshua Redman, and Norah Jones off the top of my head.  I have listened to a lot of genre's and I'm still listening for something new that is exciting to me.  With the turning of each season my musical tastes change to fit what I'm doing with my life and the activities that fill my time.

What do you like to do besides being a DJ?

Besides being a DJ I play rugby, train for crossfit, and cook A LOT.  I enjoy eating healthy with takes up a lot of time and money so I usually end up cooking everyday.  I enjoy playing sports if there is a pick up game, I'm IN.  If I don't know the sport I'll learn fast.  I try to be as active as possible and there is little time for moseying around in my life.  I try to be as happy as possible and find the little or small joy in bad situations to pull you through, sitting and pouting doesn't accomplish anything.
