DJ of the Month - June 2012
Yellow Crocs

The DJ of the Month for the ripe month of June is no one other than our groovy friend in the yellow crocs, Yellow Crocs! He's been up in the 'RUV scene since his arrival at UVM, supplying listeners with smiles and tunes so funky even the lamest of wallflowers can't stop shoulder shruggin'! His studies in electrical engineering have contributed to the construction of his head-nodding music that can be heard on his show "The Musical Adventures of a Turntable Warrior" every Saturday afternoon airing from 3-6 pm.
What brought you to WRUV?
Growing up in Burlington, VT, I have been listening to the station since I can remember. I have also had friends who are at UVM before I was even a student here myself. One of those friends, Josid Ridolofo mentioned to me that he was going to try-out to be a DJ with the station during my summer between High School and becoming a student at UVM. I had been an avid part of theater from a young age and knew that I wanted to have a theatrical outlet while in school. I have also had a strong interest in music since a young age and once Josid mentioned the opportunity I knew WRUV could be a place for me. In first semester of school I made my first demo tape. Unfortunately, I forgot to include a news segment.. When I got the call that my first demo could not be accepted because of this technicality the program director, Emily Major, mentioned that my demo tape otherwise was really good otherwise. So the next semester I made a new demo tape.. and have been a big part of WRUV since.
Talk to us about you show--what kind of tunes do you play? Where did you get your show name?
When I was in High School, the "crocs" fad was in full effect. My step-mother got me a pair of yellow crocs during this time to wear around the house. I, being an individual that like to wear strange things, decided to wear them all the time, against her recommendation. When I was a freshmen in college many people around campus began calling me "Yellow Crocs" as they were a defining feature when observed across the green. This title became infamous enough that people I did not know would call me "Yellow Crocs" when I had to choose a DJ name, it seemed appropriate to use this title and keep going with it. As far as music, I play a variety.. mainly funk, Hip Hop, Soul, down-tempo electronic, instrumental Hip Hop, prog rock, experimental, Reggae, Jazz, Folk, spoken word (such as comedy). Last year (2 summers ago through last summer) I had a show titled "As Much Wax As Possible," where I played all vinyl. In my show this summer "The Musical Adventures of a Turntable Warrior" it is more about playing an interesting variety of music and less about the format of it. Previous show titles also include "Looking at the Sun," "Music for the Soul," among others.
If you could choose one celebrity/animal/alien/ relative to rock your yellow crocs and boogie with you in the on-air booth, who would it be and why? What would you dance to?
I would want to do a show with J Dilla, Madlib or MF Doom in the room. I would be the only one in the yellow crocs. Dancing may occur but more likely severe head-nodding to underground funk 45s that have not seen the light of day in quite some time.
What do you like to do besides being a DJ?
I study electrical engineering at UVM and I really like to build things. I would like to design new ways to store energy that involve a completely eco-friendly system (ie biodegradability, little to no emissions, high efficiency, premium durability, etc.) . In order to complete this goal I spend a large portion of my time studying semi-conductors and other related material. I also have an interest in building musical equipment and will be undertaking a a senior project this fall (with a team of other engineering seniors) to build a musical instrument based on the Theremin. In my free time, I also enjoy making art (for the first 3 years of my six-year program in school I had a double major in studio art and electrical engineering), making beats on my MPC2000, cooking with fresh food, watching old 70s & 80s kung-fu movies (go watch Shogun Assassin), supporting the local music and art scene, listening to comedy podcasts, and hanging out with intelligent people that share my dislike for small talk. for updates about my show/art/music check out my facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ pages/Yellow-Crocs/ 172953906059511
