The opening number, Rotgut Run, has a nice driving on-the-road feel to it, building up momentum. Actually, transportation plays a big part on this album as a whole (V-8 Ford, Zydeco Train . . .) as do animals (Dog Days, Three Cool Cats, Monkey . . . ), all set to a toe-tapping beat.
Dont Play: Track #9, Taint FCC Violation
A thoroughly enjoyable mix of piano-based blues. Bogart, who is better known for her work with the tenor sax, coined the term blusion to describe her forays into boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country, and jazz.
Interesting twist this month! Co-hosts of "Psychotic Spaghetti" Dox & Kyyote (Lev & Karla) are dedicated WRUV-stars who have put in much effort towards advancing our interests as a radio station. For their interview we had Lev & Karla answer each others questions. Check out their facebook page, enjoy their quirky interview & keep up the good work kiddos!
What brought you to WRUV?
Karla has always had an enthusiasm for transmitters. When she was a toddler her aunt got her a toy phone for her birthday and she would spend hours each day ‘calling’ her imaginary friends who lived all over the world. Her love of all transmitters began with that first toy phone, and today, she still enjoys opening and closing her garage door using the garage door opener, and she watches TV just so she can use the remote to change the channels. In the fall of 2011 when she began her freshman year at UVM, she was immediately attracted to WRUV because we have the biggest transmitter on campus.
Lev came to ‘RUV because of his love for obscure music, to get experience for a possible future at a music label and to get his voice on the airwaves.
Tell us about your show--what kind of music do you play? Where did you get your show name?
Karla is a co-host on Psychotic Spaghetti, which gets transmitted to the world each and every Monday from 8-10pm. The name Psychotic Spaghetti came to Karla in a dream over winter break. In the dream she was making some spaghetti for lunch. She boiled a pot of water, and poured in the raw pasta, but the spaghetti didn’t turn edible, it turned psychotic. As the pasta sat in the boiling water it began to shimmy, glow and expand. The neon noodles kept growing, until the mass of spaghetti filled up her house, and Karla had to swim through it, and spill out her front door. This strange dream was the main inspiration for our show name, as well as the type of music we play.
We play mainly psych and loud, lo-fi garage rock we can dance to. Sometimes we play folk(ish) music but mostly we play songs we like the names of. Our show name, Psychotic Spaghetti, came from an artist named Shakey Graves, which kind of sparked our friendship. We had trouble picking a name and after playing the Wikipedia game for almost 2 hours we remembered that Shakey writes strange stories on a blog. In one he mentioned “psychotic spaghetti western opera music” and we figured it was a good choice especially since spaghetti is delicious.
Paint a picture of the ideal dream date for your cohost. (Think of cool musician boyfs/girlfs, possible concerts they may attend, what they'd wear, what they'd munch on, etc.)
Karla’s dream date would take place on a Monday morning, and her date would have to be Mac Demarco. They’d wake up really early to take a sunrise hike up Mount Mansfield. Once they reach the summit Mac and Karla would yodel until at the rising sun until they lose their voices, then they’d lie on the ground, and roll all the way down the mountainside.
Lev’s dream date would probably be with a girl who loves chickpeas and thai iced tea. They would cook dinner together, get milkshakes, then go to a basement show and smile together while listening to the bands play. After smiling and standing and maybe dancing, they would go on a walk and find a spot to stargaze for a while. Then Lev would walk the girl home and the date would have gone so well that they make plans to get coffee the next day.
What do you like to do besides being a DJ?
Besides being a DJ, Karla likes to be out in the wild, and go to concerts. Her ABSOLUTE FAVORITE thing to do is to combine those interests, and go to concerts that are in the wild. She’s been hanging out in Centennial woods a lot, trying to lure passing musicians into the woods for a private show, but they usually get creeped out and run away.
Besides being a DJ, Lev is an active member of society. He loves getting addicted to new television shows during finals week, taking photos with his camera, going to coffee shops, going to concerts, procrastinating, reading and listening to ridiculous amounts of music.
