Arbutus
Blue Hawaii
review by justintime

Untogether is the second album from Montreal band, Blue Hawaii.  The music is a mix of Folktronica and chillwave with airy, haunting vocals from the mysterious Raphaelle.  The music itself has a cold edge to it, like something you would hear in a fairy tale that takes place in an enchanted forest in the middle of winter.  The album is dreamy and alluring, the song bewitching and elegant.  A wonderful sophomore effort.

RIYD: Ariane Moffatt, Miranda Sex Garden, Grimes, Diva Dompe

Tracks: 1,3,4,5,6,7,8

The latest from Bjork is a remix album titled Bastards.  The album remixes tracks from the Biophilia album.  The music ranges from Middle Eastern Electronica, Dance Ambient, Electro Hop, and Dubstep along with her iconic vocals.  Lots of variety to choose from.

Autechre
review by justintime

Autechre is back this time with two hours of music on a double disc album titled Exai.  True to form, this album is dark and glitchy with heavy beats.  The music has elements of Dark Ambient, Experimentalism, IDM, Industrial and Electro Hop.  The tracks vary a bit as well from dark and menacing to a more sleek neo-urban sound.  While these tracks aren’t dance floor friendly, they do have a certain groove to them that gets your mind and body moving.  Mysterious, neo-futuristic with a sleek urban feel these tracks conjure up the dark forces of electronic music.

Tracks: Disc 1:1,2,4,5,7,9   Disc 2: 1,2,3,7,8

Data Romance
review by justintime

Data Romance’s full length debut is titled Other.  Similar to their self-titled Ep the music is a mix of Electro Pop with a dark moody undercurrent.  Amy Kirkpatrick provides the vocals which are very melodic and haunting and have an attractive airiness to them.  The tracks bounce from being very dark, almost gritty to a more lighthearted sound.  This might sound contradictory but Kirkpatrick’s vocals bridge these two styles and the track layout has a good flow.  This is a solid debut from this Vancouver band.

RIYD: Portishead, Bjork, Sietta, Burial

Tracks: 2,5,6,7

Ulrich Schnauss
review by justintime

A Long Way To Fall is the most recent release from Ulrich Schnauss.  The music is dreamy Ambient Dance/Ambient Techno.  Very similar to Tycho, these tracks float and drift yet instead of disappearing into the mist they are anchored by a solid beat structure.  The good/bad thing about this style of music is that it as the album progresses, it does become ambient that is it disappears into background rather than completely capturing your attention.  Nevertheless, this a great album to chill to or something to play at bedtime or taking a nap.

RIYD: Tycho, Boards Of Canada

Tracks: 2,3,5

The latest from David Starfire is titled Ascend.  The music is a mix of Bhangra, Arabic, Dub, Reggae, Dubstep, Moombahcore all wrapped around a Downtempo, Electronica vibe.  The Dubstep mixed with the various international sounds creates an interesting and creative mix.  There’s a lot of variety here so give it a listen.

Tracks: 1,2,7

3rd release for VT-based group is a combo of rock and country sounds. Banjo is most prevalent but you'll also hear hints of organ, horns and some mighty fine fiddlin'!  They're sound has been described as "green mountain soul" and "modern backwoods music ".   Try 1, 2, 6, 9 & 10

RIYL: Drive-By Truckers, Wilco, The Band
