Simian Mobile Disco
review by justintime

The latest from Simian Mobile Disco is a live album titled Live.  The album takes tracks from various albums past and present and the album is a continuous mix.  The music is Minimal Techno/Techno House with touches of Ambient Dance.  The music seems straight forward but the tracks are super-hot, non-stop, and are hi energy.  An awesome live album as well as an awesome dance album.

Talk Show Ghosts
review by jklotter

These three short tracks are not only the first studio material from Burlington band Talk Show Ghost, but also the most bitchin' Mario Kart soundtrack ever.  60's sci-fi synths and persistent creeping drums form a surreal soundscape devoid of human life or any real emotion except for the groove.  The arrangements are goofily dramatic and reminiscent of a chase scene from Scooby Doo.  These demos show the band's focus on forming sound-trackable tunes that are a journey in themselves.  At times the listener can hear the start of something magnificent like an early Unicorns demo, but based on these tracks the band's ambition is still undefined.  For now we have three amazing songs to get rowdy in a basement with or play N-64 to.  No vocals, all boogie.

Greg Boring
review by limccart

They describe their music as ‘slackerdelia’, and confess that, “we have no recollection of recording this”, but Greg Boring’s music hints at subtle intention. The music is a analogue-synth muddle of aspiring jazz, where psych and pop get slathered in improvisation. The songs often begin with a decently clear melody, but the melody will be disturbed by an undercurrent of cacophony and heavy instrumentation. Slackerdelia.

Scott & Charlene's Wedding
review by limccart

On his second full-on release as Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Craig Dermody sticks to the subjects and delivery he used on his previous album ‘Para Vista Social Club’. The lyrics are biographical, the guitars are fuzzy, the drums are strait-forward, and the combination makes some pleasant slacker rock. This EP definitely marks a step-up from his last album, the lyrics are more poignant and funny, the melodies are more interesting and the song structures do more exploring. Each song on this EP is able to hold up on its own, and Scott & Charlene’s Wedding is wallowing into deserving more and more recognition.

RIYL: Mac Demarco, Built to Spill

The Joy Formidable
review by cnoboa

The Joy Formidable’s sophomore album, Wolf’s Law, is a strong release from this Welsh trio. Though this album is only their second, The Joy Formidable have been releasing music in the form of singles and EPs since 2007. Having matured musically since forming, this second full-length release sounds stadium ready, with a lavish, intense feel fit for the prog-rock genre. Wolf’s Law seems split into two halves: the first half (1-5) being loud and progressive, the second half (6-11) being much more melodic and varying in sound. This is a very complex and well crafted album from The Joy Formidable. Note: There’s a hidden track at the end!
